And The Silver Goes to………

Karen Sweet!

You may have seen Karen walking on Ballinger Way any day of the week in any kind of weather. Karen started to walk years ago when she discovered she had an arthritic knee and was told that exercise could help. During her travels down and back to Starbucks she happened to notice Lake Forest Park Curves and decided to have a look. She liked what she saw and joined us in January 2004. She started coming three days a week, as we suggested and went around the circuit three times each time she came. Since then, she has modified her workout and counts the repetitions on each machine. She also weighs herself before and after each work out. Over the years she has lost about 40 pounds but, more importantly, she has kept it off.

Karen has always participated in the games and activities we have at Curves but for some reason the Summer Marathon really grabbed her. She started coming seven days a week and even took a travel pass with her while she spent time at the family retreat up north. Her die rolls were always pretty good to her, starting with the first one (a six) but the spinner caused her some problems. Janet Walsh, our winner was amazed when she came in one day and found that Karen had narrowed her lead noticeably. That was a result of a really good spin and all the days that she had been to work out while she was away.

Our hats are off to Karen for running a really good race.

Congratulations’ to all the members that finished and to those who managed the half marathon as well.

A special thanks to Cheryl for creating the game and helping all of us set realistic goals for the summer. The purpose of the game was to encourage members to work out during a season when it is easy to find other ways to spend our time. And boy did it work!! Keep up the good work MEMBERS!

Celebrating Birthdays

Happy birthday! Help us celebrate your birthday today, no matter when your birthday is. We want to celebrate today and in the many years to come.

This month, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, we are going to help you exercise good breast health. Breast Cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. There were 460,000 deaths in 2008 from breast cancer. The statistics are startling, but did you know that about 30% of cancer deaths can be prevented?

The three main ways to prevent cancer are -

1. Reduction of tobacco use
In all honesty, no amount of tobacco is a safe amount. Your body will immediately begin to reap the benefits once you stop smoking. Within 24 hours, your chance of a heart attack has already decreased. After a few weeks, your circulation and lung function will improve. After 1 year, your risk of suffering a heart attack drops to half the risk of a smoker. After 10 years, your risk of lung cancer is half that of a smoker. There's no better time than today to stop using tobacco!

2. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle
A healthy diet with regular exercise can make all the difference. A diet of lean protein, whole grains, and loads of fruits and veggies is the first step. Are you having problems with your diet? Bring in your food journal and we can help you make realistic goals and get on track with your diet. A good workout routine is the second step. Make sure to get in your three Curves workouts a week, and if you want to throw in Curves Circuit with Zumba for the cardio days that would be great! Other things like taking the stairs, walking the dog, parking farther out will help you stay active as well.

3. Early detection
Many doctors feel that early detection for breast cancer saves thousands of lives each year. Early detection leads to an earlier diagnosis and treatment. We encourage you to practice monthly self-exams, along with yearly mammograms.

We are providing you with a sword and shield for your battle against breast cancer. It's up to you now. Let's all step up and fight. Fight for your birthday - today and in the many years to come.

Monthly Exams

Monthly self-exams are a vital part of the early detection of breast cancer. Almost 80% of breast cancers not discovered by a mammogram are found by a self-exam. Are you one of the many women who still don't perform monthly self-exams? Let's change that.

Talk to your Circuit Coach about the Liv®Aid. The Liv®Aid is a fluid-filled pad that will enhance your sense of touch during a self-exam. It provides a modest barrier between the breast tissues and fingers, while at the same time acting as a magnifying glass for your fingers.

Order your very own Liv®Aid today. And don't forget to ask us to show you the "sugar demonstration" when you do. This may just be the best birthday present you've ever received!

Spotlight on Success - Shelley Kehoe

At five feet four inches tall, Shelley Kehoe has always been considered small boned and petite. An active wife and mother of three, Shelley tried to do her part to stay healthy. So when fifty-two year old Shelley went in for her yearly mammogram in 2004, it was just part of her regular routine. However, the results of the mammogram were anything but regular.

Shelley's doctor detected a mass that was imbedded very deep. The mass was so deep it couldn't be detected from the outside. There was no biopsy. Without a doubt, it was breast cancer. Surgery was immediately scheduled. Shelley had her first surgery in August and a second in October, followed by 7 weeks of radiation.

There were times during the treatment Shelley wanted to throw in the towel. But she persevered. She often looked to her daughter for inspiration and encouragement. Prior to the breast cancer diagnosis, Shelley's daughter had invasive scoliosis surgery. Shelley explains, "Her drive helped pull me through my treatments. If she can do it, I can too!"

Shelley fought a hard fight, and she won her battle against breast cancer. However, in March 2005 Shelley's oncologist became concerned. Shelley survived breast cancer, but now her blood pressure was off the charts and she was borderline diabetic.

You see, Shelley turned to food as a comfort during her treatment. She became what we commonly refer to as an emotional eater. But instead of gaining comfort and happiness, Shelley gained a significant amount of weight. Her small frame was now supporting 173 pounds.

Shelley's doctor actually recommended Curves. He felt that the hydraulic equipment was much better for strength training than weights. Even though she had her oncologist's recommendation, Shelley still wasn't convinced about joining Curves, but a trip to Target was the final turning point. When a size 20 pant fit her, Shelley fell apart. She was devastated.

The devastation quickly turned to determination. On March 8, 2005 Shelley joined the Concord / Clayton, California Curves. She was immediately hooked. The music and atmosphere were inviting and encouraging, but for Shelley it was all of the smiles that truly provided positive enforcement. Shelley watched as the members changed stations every 30 seconds as their circuit coached cheered them on. Everyone was smiling.

With her family 100% behind her, Shelley jumped in whole-heartedly. There was no tip-toeing. She committed to her Curves workout four days a week, Monday – Thursday. Shelley also changed her eating habits. She watched her fat intake, and simply started to eat healthy. The emphasis was not on a diet, but rather a lifestyle. Food was no longer seen as comfort. It was fuel.

Shelley's first goal was to be in a size 14 after 12 months at Curves. But by the end of that first year, she was actually in a size 8. And by December 2006, Shelley was down 60 pounds and was in a size 4!

Then in April 2007, Shelley made her usual trip to Mervyns to buy new pants in a smaller size. While she was there, a sales clerk asked Shelley about modeling for Mervyns. Shelley called a talent agent and has been a very busy model ever since.

Today Shelley remains breast cancer free and she continues to maintain her 60 pound weight loss. She's loving every day and living life to its fullest. Shelley explains, "I thank God for all of my blessings, and I never complain about a birthday. Birthdays are a good thing – a very good thing!"

Pumpkins Galore

So, we're well into fall now. Many areas are even feeling a nip in the air. Have you noticed how many pumpkins are around? It seems that pumpkins have almost become symbolic of this time of year. A lot of the popularity and folklore date back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack. It's even been said that the original Pilgrim settlers may have died from starvation if it had not been for pumpkins. But did you know that pumpkins are super healthy too? Pumpkins are very low in calories. They contain no saturated fats or cholesterol, and they are loaded in fiber, anti-oxidants, minerals, and vitamins. So, in reality, we should really celebrate every season with a little bit of pumpkin.

Try out these yummy recipes. They're guaranteed to put a smile on the meanest of jack-o-lanterns! Plus, everyone will think you're being seasonally festive, even if you're just in it for the good nutrition.
